Failure of U.S. College Graduation Rates

Ins and Outs of Higher Ed, USA Today, June 10, 2008.

If you have seen the movie Field of Dreams, then you can already hear the mantra in your head, “If you build it, they will come.”  Colleges have built great institutions and marketing programs to attract the finest students and every fall the classrooms are packed.  However, at the end of the four, five, or six years only 40% of the students from their freshman year finish the job i.e. get a degree.  If you do the math, 60% of students do not make it out with a degree, but you can be sure the student loans come calling, degree or not.  Who is to blame?  Everyone, students, parents, college counselors, educators, and legislators all obsess about getting “into” college but few obsess about getting “out” of college.
