Public schools in Minnesota are now offering full-day kindergarten for a fee. Given the pressure of the federal No Child Left Behind Act, kindergarten is becoming less focused on learning by play. Instead, kindergarteners are engaged in more academically rigorous activities to make kids “reading ready” by introducing letters, words, and other concepts at a younger age. Another advantage is that the full-day pace allows teachers to revisit lessons as necessary to improve understanding.
