Kentucky College Free To Those Willing To Work

With No Frills or Tuition, A College Draws Notice, N.Y. Times, June 21, 2008.

$1.1 billion dollar tax-free endowment in little Mount Airy, Kentucky has students going to college for free at Berea College.  Berea has no football team, coed dorms, hot tubs or climbing walls.  Food comes from the college farm, handmade furniture comes from college craft workshops, and every student has a 10-hour-a-week-job on campus.  Are the “big” universities doing enough for the public good to warrant their tax exemption?
