Authors of ACE Essay Suggest a New System for Assigning Academic Credit

The American Council on Education has released an essay that addresses current debates about student learning and academic quality in the age of distributed education.

In today’s evolving system of online, asynchronous distributed education, does the continued use of credit hours and grades as the principle measure of academic achievement make sense? The authors of the essay suggest the most straightforward way to address the problems associated with older measures of achievement is to “shift from a seat time-based to a competency-based approach to academic accounting.”
